Out of focus; probably.

But, you may still find that a wide-angle lens does not pick up as much from a distance. The size of the anomaly, spot size ratio and spatial resolution may affect what you can actually see.

Wide-angle lenses are also better at focal distances at close-up applications. Minimum focusing distance is much closer with a short lens than a long lens and depth of field (objects in acceptable focus at different distances) is also better.
